When residents suggested putting a book exchange in the entrance of their building, most people liked the idea. They had books they no longer needed, and they wanted an easy way to share them. A volunteer found an unused shelf and asked the building manager where it could safely stand. The manager chose a corner that did not block the doors.
During the first month, the shelf quickly filled up. Some books were damaged, and several large boxes were left on the floor. Instead of closing the exchange, the volunteers wrote three simple rules: bring books in good condition, leave them on the shelf and take home anything that does not fit. They also invited residents to recommend a favourite book on a small noticeboard. The shelf gradually became both tidier and more useful, and neighbours who had rarely spoken began discussing what they were reading.
