The residents’ committee was considering what to do about the tables in its shared meeting room. Several surfaces were scratched, and two tables had become unstable. One member suggested replacing everything so that the room would have a consistent appearance. Another argued that most of the tables were still useful and that replacing them all would be wasteful. Both wanted a welcoming room, but they had different views of how to achieve it.

Before voting, the committee requested separate estimates for repairs and replacement. It also asked a qualified repairer to assess which tables could be restored reliably. The assessment showed that the unstable tables needed different work from those with surface damage. The committee decided to repair the suitable pieces and replace the remaining ones with a compatible design. This compromise was not simply halfway between the original proposals. It depended on distinguishing appearance from function and on obtaining information that neither side had initially provided. Members later agreed to inspect the furniture regularly, so that future decisions would be based on its condition rather than on a single disappointing impression.
