A college surveyed students about its evening workshops. Of the students who responded, a large majority described the workshops as useful. The programme director initially read this as a strong reason to expand provision. A colleague, while welcoming the positive feedback, pointed out that the questionnaire had been distributed only at the final session. Students who had stopped attending were therefore unlikely to be represented. The results described the experience of those who remained, but could not establish how useful the programme had been for everyone who enrolled.
The team decided to contact former participants with a shorter set of questions. Some had left because their work schedules changed; others had found the material less relevant than expected. These accounts did not invalidate the favourable responses. They changed the question the team needed to answer: under what circumstances did the workshops meet students’ needs, and where did their design create barriers? The revised report retained the original findings, explained the limits of the sample and recommended a smaller trial of alternative times and topics. Its conclusion was less dramatic than the first proposal, but more useful for deciding what to change.
